Automatic Georeferencing of Topographic Raster Maps

In recent years, many scientific institutions have digitized their collections, which often include a large variety of topographic raster maps. These maps provide accurate (historical) geographical information but cannot be integrated directly into system (GIS) due to lack metadata. Additionally, the text labels on map are usually not annotated, making it inefficient query for specific toponyms. Manually georeferencing and annotating these is cost-effective collections. This work presents fully automated approach based recognition geocoding pipeline. After recognizing maps, publicly available geocoders were used determine region interest. The was validated collection historical contemporary We show that this can geolocate fairly accurately, resulting in an average error only 316 m (1.67%) 287 (0.90%) 16 9 spanning 19 km 32 km, respectively (scale 1:25,000 1:50,000). Furthermore, allows queried recognized visible found toponyms, further improves accessibility quality collection.
